The books ready to leave Euro-Tran Despatch on their trip to Africa.
Euro-Tran became involved with a book collection initiative to benefit kids in Africa. The books collected had to get there and we pitched in to help. The collection was organised by retired schoolteacher Trevor Wilson, from Steeton, in association with the Char Char Trust – a charity set up to provide books and resources for African schools in memory of a mother and daughter who were trampled to death by an elephant.
Mr Wilson, who runs his own publishing company Caboodle Books, asked authors to give up a day of their time in July to visit 14 schools and give a presentation on their work.
Pupils were asked to contribute by bringing in a book they had read and enjoyed to donate to schools in Malawi.
The youngsters put a personal message in their books and the recipients were encouraged to write back to promote links between the different countries.
Mr Wilson, who also runs a scheme called Authors Abroad, which sends children’s authors overseas to promote their books, said: “The support has been fantastic. Eight authors took part this year, but I have got support from all 40 authors I work with.
“Everybody wants to do it again and I am hoping it will become a national, annual event. Authors want children to be inspired by reading and writing so I can’t imagine anybody saying no.
“The kids were also very supportive because they knew their books were going to children like them.”
Author Alan Gibbon will be travelling to Malawi in October where he will help distribute the books along with 6,000 pencils donated by Lakeland. No doubt if it becomes an annual event we will look to get involved next year.

We are currently looking into introducing a local service aimed at providing a cost
effective, overnight service throughout the West/North Yorkshire areas. Perhaps
even including South Yorkshire. Would such a service benefit you ?
We would have a target of £3 up to 20 kilos, and look to provide the service over
the BD,LS,HX,HD,WF,HG,and possibly the YO/S postal codes. Such a service would
be more cost effective than using your own delivery vehicle. The service would of
course work within the current online booking procedures, and be trackable, POD’s
online, etc.
If you have any views on such a service, or can provide any feedback on other
services you feel we should offer, please let us know.
