Understand how the carriers work
So just how does a National Carrier work?
Almost without exception the national carriers operate a hub and spoke type of operation. This involves a hub or hubs as the focal points for a number of, or a network of, Depots.
Each Depot operates out of its pre-determined catchment area, usually based around a postal code.
Freight is shipped every Evening, by an overnight 'trunk' vehicle to the central hub.
At the central hub state of the art sortation equipment, scans, weighs, cubes and sorts the freight. During this process this freight finds its way from the collection depot 'trunk' vehicle, to the delivery depot 'trunk' in an extremely short period of time. This part of the process is termed 'Cross Decking' . This outbound trailer, as was the inbound, is loaded with a series of cages; this vehicle sets out back to the delivery depot. The 'trunks' represent the spokes of the process. Hence the term 'Hub and Spoke' operation.
Hubs require efficient scheduling , The smallest hiccup can prove disastrous in terms of meeting deadlines, Hubs today are in fact so efficient that when it does go wrong, It goes wrong 'Big Time' and can take days to return to more normal service levels. This of course should never happen, but as with all things, sometimes it does, The bigger the operation - the worse the effect.
Your Parcel Carrier literally operates around the clock to ensure your parcel is delivered on time.
Hub's only work within a strict military style timed operation. The Late trunk can cause severe problems. Weather, motoring accidents, and holiday congestion all detract from a smooth running hub.
Most hubs, be it to handle parcels or pallets, are, for obvious reasons based in the East/West Midlands. As a rule central for UK operations and close to the motorway network.
We commence our look at a typical parcel delivery cycle at 4.45pm, When your happy, smiling, delivery driver arrives to collect your overnight despatch.
Imagine this scenario.
4.45pm |
The happy cheerful Driver arrives to collect your parcel, yours may be one of 20 collections on his list after delivering some 80 local deliveries. |
6.05pm |
The happy cheerful driver arrives back at his depot, de-briefs and your parcel, along with thousands of others is sorted, labeled , and scanned, before being placed in regional cages and loaded onto the nightly trunk vehicle. |
7.00pm |
The First trunk vehicle, filled with parcel cages is now ready to roll, These Multi decked trailers crammed with thousands of parcels await the arrival of the night trunk driver who will leave the depot at exactly the same time every evening on route to the hub. |
7.30pm |
Your parcels start their journey from lets say Skipton on route to there destination in Sunny Torquay. Meantime, slightly earlier the Torquay depot releases its first trunk vehicle on route to the hub, on board could be anything from urgent contract documents, to a car door bought on Ebay. Both depots vehicles are tracked on their way to the hub, this in order to maintain the scheduling and complete a delay free turnaround. |
10.30pm |
Trunks are now arriving at regular intervals at the hub and the activity is building up. |
12.00pm |
Your package is now unloaded and whizzing around the belt destined for the Torbay depot section, there it will be caged and be readied for its journey down to the South West. |
2.00pm |
The trailer is sealed, the truck now rolls out of the gates on its 4 hour journey down to the South West. |
6.00am |
The Trunk Vehicle pulls into the depot yard and a frenzy of activity see's the cages off loaded and the parcels being scanned and bayed by area, meantime elsewhere in the depot, a member of staff has downloaded the manifest for the days work and is hurriedly routing the 'Happy Smiling' Torquay delivery drivers run into drop order ready for the loaders. |
7.00am |
The first van is now in the depot, and is loaded in reverse order. |
7.30am |
Your 'Happy Smiling' driver once again crosses the threshold and readies himself to the day's business - another 70 drops - yours being one of them! |
8.00am |
The van leaves the depot, It's a dash to meet the 9.00am deadline. |
9.00am |
your happy smiling driver delivers on time, intact, your Time Sensitive Urgent Delivery. |
9.20am |
The driver still has a series of 10.00am 12.00noon and Next day Deliveries to carry out before he arrives 'smiling' back at his Torquay customer collection points for goods needed tomorrow at businesses, or households throughout the UK, Europe, or indeed the world. |
