For the ad hoc user pricing varies from carrier to carrier. Some online entrepreneurs have set up despatch sites on e-bay. Tread carefully with these sites. Some sites are above board some are not.

Generally speaking, a one off 10kg parcel, collected by your local Parcel carrier depot to a UK destination should cost between £5 and £25 and would be subject to VAT. You are however dealing direct with the carrier and would benefit from their back up.

A similar parcel collected through a Parcel Consolidation website going to a Uk address, may cost between £5 and £15.

In both instances carriers tend to offer a consignment charge (for the first 10kg, some possibly 20kgs) then a subsequent kilo rate say 35p per additional kilo.

Bulky lightweight items would be 'cubed' and therefore be charged at the volumetric weight (click here to see how this is calculated)

Parcel Consolidation sites, E-bay sites selling cheaper overnight deliveries do so by opening an account with a carrier, Usually DHL or Parcelforce. These may not be the best carriers but are possibly the cheaper options. They then accumulate your deliveries, in doing so increase their 'spend level' with DHL and obtain business account status through moving higher volumes.

These sites work great until there is a problem . These sites often use two carriers, clearly the sites profit margin is not significant, they work on the basis of the carrier handles the work. When it goes wrong however communication can prove a headache. We have recently dealt with one such company, The company failed to pay several carriers, disappeared owing over £200,000 and left hundreds of e-bay users with missing parcels….You pay your money…and make your choice. If the package is worth very little then it may be convenient to find the cheapest option. If however it has value, or indeed some sentimental value stick to the reputable options.

All carriers offer Courier Pack and Mailpack options for smaller items, Each carrier is different and provide their own products.

Mailpacks
Waterproof 1 kilo maximum, usually documents only, and be careful. Most carriers offer no liability cover on such items. If its lost there is no recompense.

Courier Packs
Waterproof, 5 kilo maximum, Usually carriers will not allow liquids, Glass or other damageable items in these. They offer good value for small regular size cartons, and keep the product clean and dry in the process.

The above products are usually charged between £5 and £7 and are of course subject to vat. Ultimately you should call several carriers before making a final choice. Stick to one carrier the service is acceptable.
