Who Does What ?

All Carriers of course carry your normal sized parcels however many have specific criteria and limitations.

Chemicals and Hazardous goods are often not accepted, any goods bearing a black diamond warning notice should be checked first. TNT do accept such goods as long as the relevant Dangerous Goods Note and Safety Data is attached.

Bulky Lightweight Goods will usually be charged out on volumetric weights however, some carriers Nightfreight, for example, have a policy towards 'out of gauge' freight. They will handle such goods as a matter of course.

Long Lengths Most carriers have limitations on lengths, 2.5 metres to 3.0 metres is typical of many carriers limits. Some carriers - Tuffnells - Nightfreight - ANC - TNT may carry longer items without hikes in rates or penalties. Many just do not accept the goods.

Heavy Boxes
Many carriers have a health and safety policy which dictates that parcels should have an individual weight of under 30 kilos. That weight being the acceptable maximum weight a driver (male or female) should carry. Some carriers will accept up to 50 kilos -but will impose an 'excess' charge. Others are a little vague on the issue. Clearly, some rolls for example, have to be despatched by a certain quantity, this dictates their weight. This weight may be 70 kilos. Arguably this is not parcel traffic, hence some carriers will not accept it. A few will, and will price it on a kilo rate -others may palletise it and charge it at a pallet rate.

It is a nightmare out there. But here are a few pointers to sending a successful despatch.

1. Package it well

2. Address it well

3. Provide a sender contact address and Mobile Phone no.

4. Provide a recipients contact address and phone number

5. Ascertain what level of loss / damage liability you require

6. Weigh up service/against cost - If a delivery goes wrong carriers vary dramatically on their after sales service

7. Pray at length on the day of despatch
